Ursula von der Leyen Visits QuantumDiamonds

Munich, Germany – 12th September 2024 – QuantumDiamonds GmbH, a pioneer in commercializing quantum sensing technology, welcomed Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. Von der Leyen visited UnternehmerTUM and its Makerspace, where she observed a demonstration of QuantumDiamonds advanced quantum sensing technology. This technology provides sub-micrometer precision in detecting defects and mapping magnetic fields in semiconductor circuits, an essential tool for the next generation of semiconductor manufacturing.

During her conversations with QuantumDiamonds CEO Kevin Berghoff, von der Leyen emphasized the importance of cross-country collaboration in strengthening Europe’s semiconductor industry. She highlighted the importance of collaborations between companies and institutions across Europe, such as imec in Belgium and ASML in the Netherlands, in creating a strong semiconductor ecosystem.

"The strength of Europe lies in our ability to collaborate across borders, uniting our talents and technologies to shape the future of semiconductors," von der Leyen said. "With companies like imec and ASML, Europe is well positioned to maintain a strong position in semiconductor tooling."

Berghoff echoed this sentiment, highlighting QuantumDiamonds’ role in advancing semiconductor tooling and its partnership with major European institutions to commercialize quantum sensing technology. He also underscored the role of the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator in supporting the company's journey towards launching its breakthrough technology to the market.

"With the support of the EIC Accelerator, we’ve promptly advanced our quantum sensing technology into industrial applications, contributing to the growth of Europe’s semiconductor industry," Berghoff also mentioned.

Von der Leyen’s visit also included a stop at UnternehmerTUM and its high-tech Makerspace, which provides essential resources for startups, entrepreneurs, and researchers to prototype and develop their products. In this makerspace, QuantumDiamonds developed the first demonstration tool in 2023.
